It’s been a long time since the last US presidential election, and a lot has changed. But one thing that hasn’t changed is the interest in US politics. Thanks to the Internet and social media, people are more aware of what’s going on than ever before.
Here at Betchan, we’re always curious about how much people are betting on the next big political events, so we decided to track the betting trends over the last year and see what they tell us about the 2020 presidential election.
2020 Presidential Election Betting Trends
With the primaries for the presidential election now over, and the general election coming up, people are starting to place their bets on who they think will win. Here’s a look at the wagering trends for the last year before the election.
Trump Wins
It would be a bold move to bet against Donald Trump at this point. After all, he’s still extremely popular among Republicans and conservatives. But even so, some people have bet a lot on Clinton winning the election. In fact, according to OddsShark, there are currently odds of 5,000/1 that Clinton will win the election.
Although there’s been a lot of speculation that Biden will enter the race, he has not yet to do so. Moreover, many pundits think that the vice president will endorse Clinton, leaving her with a clear pathway to the presidency.
Betting On The House Of Representatives
The House of Representatives is another big political event that people are interested in betting on. This time around, Democrats are leading the pack of wagers, with Republicans close behind. But which way the numbers are heading is anyone’s guess.
Overall Trends In Pre-Election Betting
With the 2020 presidential election now less than a year away, it’s clear that people are getting more interested in politics than ever before. Not only do they want to bet on who will win, but they’re also interested in places and events that they think will influence the election. As you can see by the overall trends, people are placing more bets on politics as a whole than ever before. And that certainly doesn’t mean that they’re experts on politics or that they follow it closely. It simply means that they think it’s an interesting topic and that they want to follow the news about it.
Who Will Be The 2020 Democratic Nominee?
It’s no secret that Democrats are trying to coalesce around a nominee for president in order to take on Donald Trump. Everyone from Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren want to be the Democratic nominee, and currently, it seems likely that they will split the nomination between them. This, of course, means that they will all have to go through a contested primary process. But that’s what the Democratic Party does best – throw fierce battles among themselves and keep the good times rolling.
Million Dollar Elections
One of the things that has become popular at betting sites is the proposition to wager on whether or not a given candidate will be the one to cross the million-dollar mark in donations. As you can imagine, this is mostly popular amongst online betting sites and social media platforms where large sums of money can be transferred quickly and anonymously. With the deadline for the first Democratic primary contests less than a year away, it seems highly unlikely that any of the candidates will fall short of this goal, and the interest in betting on it is clear.
Did You Know That…
…there is an entire subreddit for people who want to talk about the 2020 presidential election? It’s called r/the2020rewards. There, people can give and receive tips on how to bet on the upcoming election.
…the most popular sport in New York City before the beginning of the 20th century was political betting? There are still lots of places to place bets today, but sportsbooks have mostly moved to the online atmosphere. However, if you’re in New York City, you can still find tons of bettors at the various sportsbooks and bookmakers. It’s basically a part of New York City culture.
The Next President
Now that we’ve looked at the trends for the last year, it’s time to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Trump’s presidency will certainly be interesting to watch, especially since he’s still somewhat of a political novice. But none of that changes the fact that he will be the most unpopular president in modern history when he leaves office. If you’re looking for a candidate with a 100% approval rating, you’ve come to the right place.
