New Life In College Football
The 2017 college football season was filled with lots of excitement and lots of new records, including the most watched game ever in the United States (according to ESPN). Fans are definitely still interested in college football, especially since so much has changed in the sport since the last time they were interested in a game. In 2017, there were only four NFL team in the Top 10 of most attended games, and there was only one Canadian team in the Top 10. The U.S. News & World Report ranked the Top 20 best cities for sports fans and Alabama was one of them. Thanks to the continued growth of social media and smartphones, fans can keep up with their favorite teams anywhere and at any time. This increased digital interaction has made a difference and it shows in the numbers. Attendance at college football games hit a record high in 2017, with over 94 million people attending a game (that’s about one out of every 10 Americans). College football is definitely experiencing a new era of increased popularity and that is great for the sport.
The New American Dream
The success of the 2017 college football season is a direct result of the increased popularity of the sport and more importantly, the opportunity to play for a professional team. While many college players are blessed to play for a professional team after their college career is over, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of former college football stars who are now working their way to the top in the NFL or in some other professional sport. It is certainly an achievable goal to play at the highest professional level, just like Joe Montana and Jerry Rice did, but it takes a lot of hard work and dedication. Playing in the NFL is the new American dream, just like playing in the NBA is the new American dream for many current and former professional basketball players. A lot has changed in college football since the 1970s and 1980s, when many students would turn down a football scholarship in order to play for a professional sports team. The competition is much tougher, with many big schools now recruiting primarily within their state. It has become more of a dream than a reality to play for a professional team, at least for most players. It’s still a dream for many others, however, with over 300 players selected in the 2018 NFL Draft. There is still plenty of opportunity to make it to the NFL, just like there is opportunity to make it to the NBA, but it takes a lot of hard work and dedication; many have to settle for a spot on an NFL practice squad in order to earn their place on an NFL team. The dream is still out there for many players, just like it has been for other professional sports, but you have to work for it. Football is still popular around the country and it is still seen as a stepping stone to bigger and better things in one’s life. It’s still very possible to go from local high school team to the NFL, but it takes an incredible amount of hard work, determination, and most importantly, good luck.
The Greatest Show On Earth
The 2017 college football season also witnessed the resurrection of the classic Iron Bowl, with the annual season-finale between Alabama and Auburn taking place on New Year’s Day. The game was moved to the end of the season in order to make more room for U.S. President Donald Trump’s inauguration, which took place on January 20. The game was originally going to be played on January 1 but Trump’s inauguration was pushed back a few days so that he could attend the game. Luckily, he showed up and witnessed one of the greatest shows on earth, with over 94 million people tuning in to watch the game (that’s about one out of every 10 Americans). People are definitely still interested in college football, especially since the location of the game (at least in the past) was often a deciding factor in who would win the game; for example, the last eight games of the 2016 season were all won by the team that won the previous year’s game. Last year’s Iron Bowl didn’t disappoint, with Auburn once again prevailing over Alabama, 20-16. The victors were also determined by the location of the game; Alabama won the rematch in Tuscaloosa earlier this year, 24-22. The Iron Bowl is a must-see for any college football fan, just like the Florida State-Florida game is for any basketball fan. It’s certainly exciting to see such a legendary rivalry brought back to life and experienced by so many more people. Even people who don’t care about either team involved in the rivalry can tune in and witness one of the greatest events in all of college football. There is truly something for everyone with the Iron Bowl.
The 2017 college football season was an absolute blast, with lots of exciting football games that kept fans on the edge of their seats. It was a fun and exhilarating season that showcased the best of the best in the sport. This is not a drill.
