The term “teaser” is used in many different ways in betting, but most people think of the little metal tags that pubs and some bookmakers stick on the bottom of casino chips to indicate how much value they have behind them. But, the truth is, the term “teaser” can be used in relation to many different types of bets, including:
Sports Betting
When people think about betting, they usually think about sports betting, but that is definitely not all there is to betting. There are a variety of different types of bets that you can make in relation to sports teams and athletes that are worth learning more about, including but not limited to:
Over/Under
This is a bet where you assume that the number will either be over or under the predicted outcome. If you think that a sport’s outcome will fall between two numbers (for example, the score of a baseball game will land between three and nine), then you can bet on whether that number will be exceeded or not. For example, if you think that the Boston Red Sox will score five or more runs in a game against the Seattle Mariners, but it ends up being a closer match with four runs scored, you would win the over/under bet. In this case, you would need to make an over wager of ten units on the under since the over won by one unit.
Point Spread
Another type of bet that you can make is the point spread. With this one, you are essentially placing a wager on which team will win a particular game or event. To make the bet, you will need to determine how much you are willing to wager on each team. Let’s say that you think that the Chicago Blackhawks will win the Stanley Cup this year, but the Detroit Red Wings also think that they will win the Cup. You would need to have a point spread bet where you lay off the Blackhawks and back the Red Wings. As the name implies, for every point that the Red Wings score in the series, you win the bet; while for every point that the Blackhawks score, you lose the bet. If the Red Wings win the series three games to one, then you would win twenty units, but if the Blackhawks win the series four games to two, then you would win thirty units.
Total Goal Score
Total goal score bets are similar to point spread bets, but instead of picking a team to win the bet, you are choosing the total goal score of a team or sports league. For instance, you might think that this year’s Super Bowl will have a total of forty-two points, but the Indianapolis Colts quarterback, Andrew Luck, thinks that his team will finish the game with no points. If you think that the majority of the goals will be scored by one team, then you can lay off that team and back the other one. For instance, if you think that the Colts will lose the Super Bowl and that the majority of the goals will be scored by the New England Patriots, then you can lay off the Patriots and back the Colts. If you are correct in your assessment, then you would win the bet because the total goal score of forty-two does not exceed the pre-set expectation of forty points.
Moneyline
The moneyline is the simplest type of wager to understand because it is essentially a point spread bet except that instead of picking a winner, you are picking the total amount of money that will be won or lost by the two teams named in the wager. For example, if you think that the Toronto Blue Jays will defeat the New York Yankees in the ALCS and that the winning total will be $100 and the losing total will be $50, then you can lay off the Jays and back the Yankees for $50. If the Blue Jays win the series three games to one, then you would win twenty units, but if the Yankees win four games to three, then you would win thirty units.
Combine Moneyline
If you are a fan of the NFL draft and would like to make some money, then you can take advantage of the fact that people are essentially placing wagers on what will happen in the upcoming NFL draft. One way to make cash based on those wagers is to take advantage of combine moneyline betting where you lay off the team that is favored in the most recent NCAA tournament and back the other one. Let’s say that the favorite in the most recent NCAA tournament was the North Carolina Tar Heels and you think that their star quarterback, Mitch Lockner, will be one of the first players picked in the upcoming NFL draft, then you can lay off North Carolina and back Georgia, where Lockner will declare for the draft.
Proposition
Proposition bets are one of the more interesting types of bets to place because you are essentially placing a wager on which side of an argument or issue will prevail. For example, let’s say that you are a fan of the San Francisco 49ers and you think that this season will be the best in the team’s history. You can make a proposition bet where you lay off the team that you think will have the best season in franchise history and back the other one. If the Niners have an amazing season, then you would win the bet because you correctly assessed the side that will win the most games this year.
Handicap
Another interesting bet that you can make is the handicap bet. In this one, you are essentially placing a wager on which team will score the most goals or will achieve the most points. To make the wager, you will need to figure out how much you are willing to wager on each team. For example, if you think that this season’s Super Bowl will have fifty goals scored, then you can lay off the favorite, New England, and back the Philadelphia Eagles, who you think will score the most goals.
The point of all these different types of bets is that there are so many different ways that you can win or lose money based on the outcome of a particular event, game, or tournament. While there are many books written about betting, the most important thing to keep in mind is this: The more you know, the better you can bet. So, if you want to win a lot of money, then learn how to bet smartly and accurately.
