What Does “Leg” Mean in Betting?

When betting, some people will often use the “leg” to refer to the portion of the wager that is based on the first or the last event or contest in a specific race, depending on the rules of the game. In other words, a “leg” in soccer betting usually refers to the portion of the wager that is based on the outcome of the match. The same can be said of a “leg” in basketball betting. However, a “leg” in horse racing betting can also refer to a portion of the wager where you place a side bet on one of the races, and that is the part of the wager that is based on the running of the race. This can be a little confusing, so we are going to clarify the meaning of “leg” in betting below.

What Is a “Leg” In Soccer, Basketball, And Horse Racing?

We touched on this in the last section, but let’s look at each form of betting in turn.

Soccer

In football, the terms “leg” and “over” are usually used interchangeably. However, in soccer, a “leg” can also mean the part of the field that is assigned to your team. If you place a bet on your team to win the match, you are saying that you believe they will score at least two goals. Therefore, the bet is based on the total number of goals that are scored in the match (including any extras). You can also make an “over” bet, which means that you believe your team will score at least three goals. In this case, your wager is based on the total number of goals scored in the match, including any extras. If your team scores one or two goals, you win; if your team scores three or more goals, you lose. The rules of the game determine whether or not you will win or lose on an over bet.

Basketball

In basketball, a “leg” can also refer to a quarter of the court, or the area in front of the basket. If you bet on your favorite team to win the match, you are placing a wager on which team will score the most points. In this case, your quarter is the entire court, or the area in front of the basket. If you bet on a team to lose the match, you are also placing a bet on which team will score the least points. Your wager in this case is on which team will win the match, but it is also based on the total number of points that are scored in the game (including any extras). If the score is close at the end of the game, it can be hard to determine exactly who won the match. In these situations, the “bookies” or the “sportsbooks” will often settle these types of bets by referring to the terms “points” or “fractions” (i.e., quarters, eighths, etc.) to avoid any controversies. Of course, you can also make an “over” bet in basketball, which means that you believe your team will score at least two baskets or more. In this case, your wager is based on the total number of points scored in the game, including any extras. If your team scores one or two baskets, you win; if your team scores three or more baskets, you lose.

Horse Racing

In horse racing, a “leg” can also mean the portion of the race where the horses are running. This can be the first or the last leg of a multi-leg race. If you wager on a horse race, you are usually placing a bet on which horse will win the race. However, in some cases, you can also make an “over” bet on a horse race, which means that you believe your horse will win, but it is also based on the total number of times the horse races (including any extras). Similar to the other sports we looked at so far, if the pace of the race is quick and there is little to no suspense, it can be easy to determine who exactly won the race. However, in some cases, particularly in longer races, it can be hard to tell exactly who won the race based on the information given. In these situations, the “bookies” or the “sportsbooks” will often settle these types of bets by referring to the terms “fractions” (i.e., halves, quarters, etc.) to avoid any controversies.

When Should I Use The Word “Leg” In My Bets?

It is important to keep in mind the context of the situation when deciding when to use the word “leg” in your bets. In general, you should use the term “leg” in your bets if:

  • You are playing by the rules of the game;
  • You are confident in your team’s ability to win; or
  • The outcome of the game is not in doubt (i.e., it’s obvious which team will win).

Using the word “leg” in your bets does not necessarily mean that you are placing a bet on the last event or contest in the specific race. For example, if you are watching a horse race and notice that the sixth leg is approaching, you might decide to place a bet on that horse to win the race. However, if you are playing by the rules of the game and are not sure which horse will win, it might not be the best idea to use the word “leg” in your betting. In fact, in many cases, people will use terms such as “side” or “under” instead of “leg” when making these types of wagers. This can be a little confusing, so we hope this article helped clear up any misconceptions.
