Basketball is one of the most popular sports around the world, and with good reason. Not only is it easy to follow, but the outcomes are often spectacular. You might not know what line betting is, however, and that’s okay. Here’s a brief introduction.
Line Betting Explained
Most sportsbooks offer lines on their betting boards. You’ll commonly find the lines for major sports, but can also find tickets for local or junior sports as well. Lines represent the consensus of many people who have taken a chance on betting on that particular matchup. For example, the lines on the New York Knicks vs. the Memphis Grizzlies might read as follows:
“NYK -3” (if 3 points are scored by New York in the first half) (if 16 points are scored by New York in the second half) (if the total is higher than 200)“
You’ll notice that the lines can get pretty close. That’s because there’s actually a wide margin of error built into the system. If 3 points are scored in the first half, New York is likely to only win by 2 or 3 points, and the same goes for the other situations. So, while there’s usually a clear difference between the under and the over, that spread is often closer than you’d think.
Why Use Lines?
The lines are there for a reason. They are provided to give you a general idea of how much demand there is for a particular outcome in a particular matchup. Sometimes, the line can give you a good indication of how the game will actually play out. This is important information to have before putting any money on the table. You don’t want to throw away money on a game that you think will go either way.
On the other hand, some sportsbooks provide more statistical information about the games, providing regular updates on the current line movements as well as the odds of other teams and players. This is also a good place to look if you want to follow the action live, as the odds are usually updated in real-time as results come in.
How Do The Lines Move Before / After The Game?
Let’s say you’re trying to make some money off the New York Knicks vs. the Memphis Grizzlies game mentioned above. The odds of New York winning are pretty short, as most people are betting against them. In fact, the over under (or moneyline) for this game is -410 to 1.
However, after the game has ended and the fans have left the stadium, things might change. As the Memphis players are shaking hands at the end of the game, the line might move a little bit in favor of the home team. Will New York really win this game? Probably not, but now that the game has ended the demand for that particular result has gone down, thus changing the value of the line. In this case, the line would likely move to -310 for the home team. That’s a substantial move, considering the game was so one-sided in favor of Memphis that there wasn’t a whole lot of action on the line prior to the end of the game.
This is just one example of how the lines can change after a game. Sometimes, games that you think are pretty close can end up being blowouts, which changes the entire dynamic of the line and anything else associated with it. This is why, as a general rule, you should never line bet on a game that you’re not following closely. Otherwise, you’ll likely be misled by oddsmaking errors or by faulty information.
Are The Lines Always Accurate?
The lines are usually pretty accurate, but that doesn’t mean that they’re always going to give you the right numbers. Just because the line moves a little bit in favor of your team or a little bit against your team doesn’t mean that much. You have to look at the odds in the first place to really understand how much your team can profit from a win, loss, or tie.
The odds will almost always be wrong in your favor, but that doesn’t mean that the lines are always going to give you an easy path to victory. Sometimes, the lines can be a little high or a little low depending on the day of the week or the time of day, so you might not always get your money back if you bet on those.
On the whole, though, the lines usually play out pretty close to what they’re supposed to. The main reasons for the discrepancy are things outside of the game that can affect or change the odds. Weather will sometimes wreak havoc on a game. In extreme cases, lightning can start a fire that damages or even destroys a sports stadium. In other cases, a snowstorm can ruin the fields for the day, causing postponements and/or forfeitures.
What Is A Bookie Bounce?
A bookie bounce occurs when a bookmaker pays out winning bets before collecting on losing bets. This is a bookmakers best friend, as they get paid even when the odds are against them. The worst thing for a bookie is when a player bets a large amount and then wins. In those cases, the bookie is often stuck with a lot of money that he doesn’t have. This is where the term ‘bouncing’ comes from – when a bettor wins and then decides to cash out, the bookie has to give him his winnings, but he often can’t afford to give him his losses, especially if the game was pretty far-fetched from the start.
This is why the bookies usually love large bets. They know that if the player wins, they’re going to make their money back, plus some, because the odds are usually in their favor. The problem is, when the player loses, it’s often more than the bookie is willing to absorb. In those cases, the player is out of luck and has to find other ways to make money. Sometimes, they’ll resort to taking jobs in casinos, working in a shop, or becoming a loan shark or drug dealer. These are illegal ways to make money and eventually, they’ll be caught and punished, but until then, they’re going to have to eat and live somewhere. This is where a bookie bounce comes in. When a bookie can’t afford to pay out all the money he has on hand, often he’ll borrow some money from another place or person. In most cases, this is against the law, but for now, they’re going to have to make it work.
So, in the meantime, they can make up for their losses with money they’re loaning from a bank or friend. When the payment day comes, the bookie is going to be in the same boat as everyone else. He has to pay back the money he borrowed plus a little bit more for his commission. In some cases, the loan sharks will come after you for the rest of your life, so prepare to fight or flee.
As you can see, line betting in basketball can be fun, exciting, and, at times, profitable. Still, like any other form of gambling, it can also be extremely frustrating if you don’t know what you’re doing. This is why it’s always a good idea to follow some basic guidelines. First of all, always bet on something you know well. If you’re not familiar with a particular player or team, it’s usually best to stay clear. Second, make sure you’re following the rules and regulations of the jurisdiction you’re in. Some countries or states have specific rules regarding sports betting, which you must follow. Third, make sure you’re not getting yourself into any trouble. There are plenty of places online where you can make easy money, but it usually comes with a catch. Many sites that offer sports betting require you to sign up and register, which is a mandatory step that you should take, but it’s also a step that opens you up to new marketing opportunities. If you can avoid these kinds of sites, you’re guaranteed to keep your personal information secure and your money in your pocket.
