What Is the Spread? Sports Betting – What’s the Difference Between Handicapping and Spread Betting?

We’re pleased to announce the launch of our newly designed website! We hope you enjoy it and find it useful, as we did in creating it.

One of the most interesting aspects of our new site is its content. Having covered sports betting for years, we’ve amassed a considerable amount of knowledge about betting odds, strategies, and much more.

Another significant component of our new site is its interactive features. Users can now create and save customized reports, keep track of their favourite teams and players, and much more!

What Is the Spread?

If you’ve followed our work for any length of time, you’ll know that we’re always up front about our strategies and approaches to betting. The difference between us and many other online sportsbooks is that we’ve actually designed our site with beginners, intermediates, and experienced gamblers in mind.

Many online sportsbooks, in fact, are completely inaccessible to beginners, who find it difficult to use their products without risking damaging their own bankrolls. We’re not afraid to admit that we want to attract a new audience to sports betting, and we want to do that by creating a user-friendly sports betting platform.

Why Should You Spread Bet Instead Of Handicapping?

Although there are several differences between handicapping and spread betting, perhaps the most significant one is that you should always bet with the spread in mind when doing so. In other words, always assume that the posted betting line is too high, and vice versa. This is an important point to make, because too often, gamblers get stuck in a rut and refuse to see that the betting line has, in fact, been adjusted downward in their favour. As a result, they wind up losing money.

Another major difference between the two is that in spread betting, you place an outright wager. That is, you’re not just placing a sliver of a wager or a teaser on the game. You’re actually putting money on the line. The advantage of this is that it forces you to make decisions a lot faster. You can’t afford to wait until the end of the game to see if your wager will pay off. You have to decide how much you’re willing to wager as soon as you place the bet. In many cases, this means you can eliminate losing bets by simply waiting until the end of the game before checking the results.

The Spread Is A More Accurate Assessment Of The Value Of A Game

Unlike handicapping, where you estimate the value of a game based on several factors, such as last year’s overall performance, game score, and even weather conditions, the spread is simply the total amount of money that will be wagered on one particular game. For example, if there are $100 wagered on the game, then the spread is $100. Sometimes this can be determined with some degree of accuracy, but more often than not, it is just a best guess.

Last year’s performance and score are two factors that can affect the outcome of a game. The better these numbers are, the better the value; conversely, the worse the numbers are, the worse the value. However, the spread rarely takes into consideration the strength of the opposing teams, which could also be a significant factor in determining the outcome of a game.

How Do Spreads Work?

In the simplest of terms, spreads work by taking the overall betting line and adding or subtracting from it, according to whether you’re betting on or against the spread. For example, let’s say that the betting line is set at San Francisco 49ers -6.5, and you’ve got $100 to risk. Your risk in this case would be 6.5 points. Not bad!

If you’ve followed our advice about betting with the spread in mind, you’d see that this game has an overall betting line of 6.5, which is very close to fair value. If you look at the first column in the spreadsheet below, you can see that the spread has been adjusted in your favour, resulting in a nice $6.50 profit after three weeks of play.

The beauty of this approach is that it takes the emotion out of sports betting. If you’re having a bad day, you can simply ignore all the stats and pretend that the Atlanta Falcons are actually playing the New York Knicks. Your risk in this case would be the same, regardless of the line.

Make Sense Of The Charts?

In many ways, the best feature of our new site is its interactive features. Not only can users read about sports betting, they can now actually engage with the information. For example, the odds charts below provide a wealth of data about each team in Major League Baseball. However, what if you don’t know what to make of all this statistical analysis?

Fortunately, our new site comes with several pages of help. On those pages, you’ll find clear and simple to follow instructions, as well as examples of what the data means in real life.

While we’re unable to predict the future with absolute certainty, we can at least try to analyze the present. Based on that, here’s a quick look at how MLB teams performed in 2017.

MLB Standings

As mentioned, the best feature of our website is its interactive chart, which allows users to see the 2017 MLB standings in real time, updated from head-to-head competition between teams.

Looking at our chart above, you can clearly see how the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds took the top two spots, respectively. The Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs came in at third and fourth places, respectively. Just for the record, the Los Angeles Dodgers, Toronto Blue Jays, and St. Louis Cardinals completed the top five.

Top 20 Prospects

One of the major differences between our site and many others is that we cover a much greater number of sports. As a result, our website has a greater number of betting options, which helps beginners find the right lines quickly.

In the middle of our chart above, you can see a list of the top 20 prospects at each position in Major League Baseball. To create the chart, we used the MLB.com fringe prospect rankings, which are based on recent performance, tools, and probability of making the major leagues. In other words, these rankings attempt to determine who the best remaining MLB prospects are, regardless of if they’re drafted or signed by a team. One of the significant differences between the top 20 and other prospects is that the later lacks the names of prominent players. That is because our aim is to give our users as many betting options as possible, without having to wade through hundreds of players to find the aces.

Top 25 Trends

With the regular season only halfway over, there are already a number of trends to monitor. To keep up with the latest news and rumors, simply browse our top 25 trends page. This page also includes a section devoted to the top 25 superstitions and routines of prominent athletes and coaches. In many cases, these superstitions and routines are indicative of a much deeper understanding of the game than what the public knows about them. In other words, these individuals have a mental map of the game that they use, whether subconsciously or consciously, to assist them throughout their playing careers.

On the opposite end of our top trends page, you can read about the top 25 players who will be banned from visiting the United States, in accordance with the United Nations’ General Assembly Resolution 6387 (XXV). If you’re unfamiliar, this is a resolution that attempts to preserve the human race as we know it. In other words, it is an act of self-preservation, as the planet Earth will inevitably succumb to climate change, and all living creatures, including humans, will perish.
