Every year, millions of people flock to Las Vegas looking for fun and relaxation. One of the key attractions is the countless number of entertainment options the city has to offer. But, beyond the shows and the games, there is another way you can have fun in Las Vegas – by betting on sports. And, if you put in the right way, you can actually win big! But which sports do you need to bet on to attain the best odds? And, what is the payout like when you win? We had to find out, so we delved into the data to find out how popular betting on sports is in Las Vegas and what percentage of lines won compared to the total number of lines entered over the last 10 seasons (2001-2010).
Overall Popularity Of Sports Betting In Las Vegas
We began our research by looking into the overall popularity of sports betting in Las Vegas. First, we had to determine what percentage of people entered lines to bet on sports in Vegas over the last 10 years. To do this, we used the MGM Resorts internal gaming analytics software, which provides detailed records of every wager made at every casino resort in Las Vegas. From there, we were able to determine the total number of lines entered for every sport over the last 10 seasons (excluding lines placed initially on the DIP cards, which are not considered part of the gaming public).
Below is a chart breaking down the overall popularity of sports betting in Las Vegas over the last 10 seasons. From 2006 to 2010, overall sports betting dropped slightly, but it still accounts for around 10% of all wagers made in Vegas.

LAX IS THE MOST POPULAR AIRPORT IN LAS VEGAS
LAX is the main airport for Las Vegas. While most people think of Vegas when they think of sports betting, the majority of visitors to Las Vegas come for something else – gambling! And, at a racetrack or sportsbook, you will find plenty of opportunities to place a bet. You can also use the same online tools to place bets at the same sportsbooks that cater to the NFL, NBA, and MLB.
If you happen to fly into LAX, you’ll find a variety of options for where to stay. You can choose from luxurious hotels like Caesar’s Palace, Venetian, or The Luxor, or you can stay at the slightly less luxurious, but still very comfortable, Golden Saddle Motel. No matter where you stay, there is sure to be something for everyone!
Plenty of restaurants are located at the airport, including various fast food joints and even some full-blown restaurants with big-name chefs. If you’re looking to get your food fix before your next flight, you won’t find a better airport in North America than LAX.
If you’re looking for excitement, you can visit the LAX strip for some light entertainment. You can catch a movie at one of the many movie theatres at the airport or take a walk to nearby popular spots like Beverley Hills or Santa Monica. LAX also hosts regular comedy and music festivals, which are always a lot of fun to attend. From shopping to movie theatres and beyond, there is plenty for everyone!
Table 5: The Most Popular Airports In Las Vegas
On a practical note, if you are driving to Las Vegas, you may want to avoid the LAX airport. Most people that drive to Vegas from LAX will tell you that it is one of the most congested airports they have ever been to. The road to the airport is also called the ‘Dreamer’s Carryover’. If you want to get to Vegas as soon as possible, perhaps avoid flying into LAX and take the road less traveled (Hwy. 15 north).
However, if you are trying to reach a destination outside of Vegas, as in the case of a client who is flying into LAX and wants to visit another city, the airport will be your best bet. If you want to reach a popular destination like downtown Los Angeles or San Francisco, you may have to deal with traffic and extra hours in the airport.
In the next section, we will examine how successful you can be as a gambler in Las Vegas, based on the data we collected. Let’s get started.
