What States are Considering Sports Betting?

With the 2020 NFL season having just started, people are already dreaming of the big games that they will witness live in person this year. Of course, you may be among those people. It’s no secret that the NFL is one of the most popular sports leagues in the world. Every year, fans from all over the world tune in to watch their favourite teams play live. Unfortunately, in terms of pandemic restrictions, many of these games will have to be played behind closed doors. This will undoubtedly change the way people engage with the NFL and the games that it sponsors.

However, it doesn’t have to. Several states have already taken steps to allow sports betting, making it possible for fans to place wagers on the games they are following even if they can’t leave their homes. If you’re interested in placing bets on your favourite sport, keep reading because we have compiled a list of the states that are currently considering legislation to allow sports betting.

Where Can I Place My Bets?

When people think of sports betting, images typically come to mind of people sitting in the stands at a game, odds displayed on a screen in front of them, and the clacking of coins as they turn over their lines. While most states have still not loosened their restrictions enough to allow for legal sports betting, those that have have opened up their books to licensed operators, meaning that you can place your bet at any major bookmaker. Typically, places like Betfred, Paddy Power, and Westgate Bookies are accessible from anywhere in the country. If you’re a resident of one of these states, you can access legal sports betting right now.

New Hampshire

If you are visiting New Hampshire, you will notice one of the first states on this list. It’s not a complete surprise, as the state is home to the second-largest university in the country, the University of New Hampshire. Not only does UNH have a very vibrant alumni base, but it also attracts a lot of international students and professors who are passionate about their studies. What’s more, the state is fairly famous for its historic baseball bat, the Louisville Slugger, and its annual baseball tournament, the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament. New Hampshire residents also have the option of attending any of the eight other universities in the state. Although the situation on the ground is changing, as of yet, there are no plans for legal sports betting in New Hampshire.

Maine

Maine was actually one of the first states to pass legislation to make sports betting legal. It did so in 2018. What’s more, in 2014, Maine became the first state to allow students to play professional sports in college. Since then, more states have followed suit, allowing students to play while they are in school. This may provide a unique perspective for a sports bettor looking to place a wager. It also means that more and more sports are being offered at the collegiate level, giving you more chances to win! The situation with regard to legal sports betting in Maine is somewhat similar to that of New Hampshire. Currently, Monmouth Park, the home of the Maineiacs, a professional baseball team, is the only legal sports betting venue in the state. They have been operating for over 100 years and boast one of the most historic sports venues in the country. There are no current plans to expand the venue’s activities to include other sports.

Vermont

The first state on our list is Vermont. It is famous for being one of the most expensive states to live in. Not only is there generally high demand for homes and property there, but many residents are also passionate about their sports teams. The state is home to the University of Vermont, which, in turn, is home to the Catamounts, its professional baseball team. There are also currently two minor league baseball teams located in the state. The Portland Sea Dogs and the Vermont Lake Monsters, both of which play at Jack Murphy Stadium.

The situation with regard to legal sports betting in Vermont is somewhat different from that of the other states on this list. It was one of the first states to allow for legal sports betting and has allowed for casino betting on sporting events since 1990. The status of sports betting in Vermont is still somewhat uncertain. It is currently legal to bet on horse racing at the Vermont Racing Board facilities. However, it is still banned at State-owned racetracks. No other sport has been allowed at a joint venture between the State and a private entity. This could change in the future, as some people in the State Legislature have suggested expanding the activities of the VRRB to include other sports. It is important to note that, at this time, there are no plans to lift the prohibition on sports betting, which would allow for additional venues to open up for wagering.

Washington

Washington was one of the first states to legalize sports betting. It did so back in June 2019. However, due to statewide school closures that same year, it didn’t have the opportunity to use the legislation. It returned in December with a more tailored approach to the issue, allowing for legal betting at specific venues, including casinos. The State has since expanded the list of legal sports betting locations, including stadiums and college campuses. It is now possible to bet legally on sports at the Capital One Arena, the home of the NBA’s Washington Wizards, and at the Washington Monument.

The situation with regard to legal sports betting in Washington is similar to that of the other states on this list. However, the numbers are a bit higher. It is possible to bet legally on sports at 19 locations in the state, including casinos and college stadiums. Major sports betting operators have also set up shop in the state, making it possible for residents to place wagers on their favourite teams even if they are unable to go to a game in person. The state’s racetracks also offer wagering, meaning that residents can place wagers on horse races, jai alai, and other sporting events at their chosen location. The situation in regard to legal sports betting in Washington is changing for the better. Several bills have been introduced in the State Legislature to allow for additional venues to offer sports betting. However, due to the pandemic, none of them have made it out of committee yet.

Colorado

Colorado was one of the first states to legalize sports betting. It did so in 2014, making it the fifth state in the country to do so. Colorado is actually home to two professional sports teams. The Colorado Rockies, a Major League Baseball team, and the Colorado Avalanche, a National Hockey League team. It is also the host of the NCAA’s College World Series each year. When it comes to legal sports betting in the state, it is important to note that gambling is only allowed at 10 locations, including stadiums, college campuses, and an online sportsbook. If you are interested in placing a bet on a Colorado team, you will need to find one of the 10 legal venues, which are all over the state.

Oregon

Oregon was one of the first states to legalize sports betting. It did so in January 2020, meaning that it will be possible to place wagers on sports after the conclusion of the NFL regular season. However, like the other states on this list, the status of sports betting in the state is somewhat uncertain. It depends on which county you are in. For instance, while some counties allow for casino betting on sports, others do not. Furthermore, while some places have opened up their books to licensed betting operators, others have still not. This means that it is not yet possible to legally bet on sports in the state.

California

Last but not least, we have California. This state was the first to legalize sports betting, doing so in January 2020. It is one of the most populous states in the country, boasting over 40 million residents. It is also one of the most visited states, due largely to the fact that Hollywood is located there. This popularity is clearly visible in the state’s sports books, which are often the busiest in the country. However, like the other states on this list, the situation in regard to legal sports betting in California is somewhat uncertain. It depends on which county you are in. For instance, while some counties allow for casino betting on sports, others do not. Furthermore, while some places have opened up their books to licensed betting operators, others have still not. This means that it is not yet possible to legally bet on sports in the state.

It is interesting to note that many of the states mentioned on this list have a connection to organized crime. However, this is due mostly to the early days of sports betting. It’s been over 70 years since sports betting became legal in most parts of the country. The game has changed a lot since those early days, with numerous states now allowing for legal sports betting and the professional sports industry thriving, ensuring that the game will always have a following.
